Tips for Blogging with a Full Time Job
I work two jobs, one full time job and one part time job, and I maintain one post going live daily. So I can't spend every moment of the day writing, editing, tweeting, photographing, and other aspects that go along with running a blog. As I'm working some days twelve to thirteen hours, where I'm doing other things that must take priority especially if I want to take home a paycheck to keep the lights on, I don't have a lot of time to solely dedicate to my blog as I would want.
So how can you maintain them all without losing your sanity in the process? The best advice I can give is to plan better. Especially as I also try to fit in two YouTube channels. One that has weekly videos and another that's almost daily videos as well. So I have to plan my weeks very strategically to fit it all in. This is more or less my current snapshot of a typical day in the week:
- Wake up at 6:30 AM
- Go to full time job at 7:10 AM
- Work until lunch. Write one to two blog posts, schedule everything to blast out to social media; while enjoying some food.
- Work until 5 PM at full time job
- Go to part time job at 5:10 PM
- Work until 9 PM at part time job
- Arrive back home at 9:30 PM
- Edit YouTube videos until 11:30 PM
- Go to Bed.
Weekends become devoted to recording videos, taking photographs for the blog, and writing anything I couldn't fit in during my lunch break. To make sure I get everything complete I use a combination of tools: Wunderlist for task management, OneNote to write up drafts and have a tentative list of videos/blog posts that I want to do for the next four months, and Hootsuite to schedule out anything to my twitter or Instagram that are extras. It also helps that I try to keep my blog at least scheduled/automated from two to three weeks out, main YouTube channel two weeks out, and gaming channel one week out as editing for this channel takes a long time when I don't get a lot of time to work on it as one video can take 7-8 hours in total for editing alone. For my blog, I leave OneNote open all day and type of basic drafts of things I've been thinking about posting so I can use my lunch hour effectively.
