This month I’m turning 24, originally I was thinking about doing an entire week decided to birthdays, but I’m honestly not feeling inspired to do that anymore and can’t think of even posts that I would honestly want to write/read. So instead I’m just going to do a few of them and just other “Growing Up” topics throughout the month of May. So today is all about things that everyone in their early 20s should know about to some level.

  1. Focus on the present as worrying about the future is a waste of time.
  2. Figure out what you don’t want in life, even if it’s something that messes up your plans.
  3. Don’t compare your path to anyone else’s.
  4. Be kind to yourself.
  5. You are going to make mistakes… and lots of them.
  6. Don’t care about what other people think.
  7. You don’t need to have everything figured out.
  8. You don’t have as many friends as before and that’s not a bad thing.
  9. It’s hard to settle down even if you want to.
  10. Life doesn’t get easier. You just learn how to deal with it.
  11. Debt is your worst enemy.
  12. It’s ok to change careers.
  13. You might move back in with your parents and that doesn’t mean you’re a failure.
  14. The real world sucks, but it’s not scary.
  15. You can’t party like you used to.
  16. College might not have been worth it.
  17. It’s okay to try new things.
  18. Peer pressure doesn’t go away.
  19. “Not knowing better” is not an excuse anymore.
  20. Things you learned in school might not apply, you might need different skills.
  21. Relationships are more serious, so make sure you make it clear where you stand on things or the direction you want things to go. Otherwise, you might be let down by the outcome.
  22. Your body is changing, and your metabolism may start to fail you.
  23. You will have existential crisis.
  24. Issues from childhood will not magically vanish or heal themselves. You have to deal with them at some point.
  25. Balancing all areas of your life: work, friends, social, etc… will be the ultimate challenge.
  26. You get to make budgets and tax returns.
  27. You start giving instead of receiving.
  28. You can’t say yes to everything as you don’t have time for everything and you’re not excepted to.
  29. You don’t owe anyone anything. You decide what’s worth it and do those things.
  30. You will have to make a lot of tough decisions. Some you can take back but a large majority you won’t be able to.

What do you think everyone in their early 20s should know?
