9-Month Update on the Curly Girl Method, and 1 Year of Hair Growth

Advertisements

It’s been a year since I got a haircut that completely wrecked my self confidence where the back was maybe an inch or two long. And about nine months since I started using the Curl Girl Method. In that time a lot has changed. I have changed hair colors several times though I’m trying to keep it more natural now (granted I’m still dying it from a cool tone color to a warm tone color in the same level every four months or so). And I did get a haircut recently to give my hair a uniform style, prior to that I had not gotten my hair professionally done since last Christmas. So, I thought I would do a little update on the hair growth and how the Curly Girl Method has been working for me.

One Year Ago

Here is where we were at almost exactly one year ago, I posted about this on December 8th, 2018 but I’m pretty sure it had been a week or so when I actually had the cut. I hated this, I literally cried over it. It was the shortest my hair had ever been and I had no idea how to style it. And when my natural wave came in, it was a poof ball that was hard to control.

Start of Curly Girl Method

On the left, is where my hair was at a day before starting the Curly Girl Method. This started in March of 2018 when my hair started to grow out. I learned about this method from Leesha on YouTube, and while my hair always had some wave to it, it was never something I thought looked good without a lot of help. So I decided I would give it a try so I could embrace what I already naturally had. On the right, is my hair the first time after using the method. I had no idea what I was doing but I could see my natural wave at the time start to come through. Something I never saw before, and could never really achieve with a curling iron.

Where We’re At Today

And here is where we’re at today, freshly cut (only took off two inches of split ends to make it healthy looking) and curls left to style themselves. Yes, curls. My hair that was once only waves, now forms actual ringlets on its own with very little assistance on my part from the Curly Girl Method. It’s not the same every day, but hey it looks so much better in my opinion. And I’m not afraid or judgmental of my hair when I leave it down, which is a good majority of the time. Before the haircut, I always was throwing my hair up because I hated it’s natural style since it was frizzy and out of control. But now, I don’t worry about that. There’s also very little product in my hair like not even a dime size amount of Briogeo Curl Charisma Frizz Control Gel and Leave-In Defining Creme. And I don’t have to put in anti-frizz oil until like the third day just to keep it looking nice, which was something I used to have to do daily.

I’d say we’re in so much better place with my hair than ever before and I love embracing it. I feel more confident and I’m not spending hours on it. Plus, I say we had a lot of hair growth. The back now matches the front in length and if I seriously wanted to, I could braid it without literally the entire thing coming apart due to being too short. I’m curious where we’ll be in another year’s time but at least for right now I’m loving it!
