My mom loves contemporary home decor along with mid-century. It’s currently one of the more popular home decor style as it’s a mixture of modern but more of a today feel to it. So instead of the hold and minimalist look of modern, contemporary interiors are comfortable and welcoming while still keeping to that minimalist approach. Fundamentally, simplicity, subtle sophistication, texture and clean lines help to define contemporary style decorating. Another way of describing it, is emphasizing space rather than things by focusing on color, space, and shape. Which is not my ideal home. But if that describes your ideal home, here are a few ideas of how to bring that contemporary concept into your place.

A Neutral Color Palette

Contemporary Interiors are comprised mainly of neutrals, black, and white. Then accented with a bright and bold color. Black is used to ground and define a contemporary style room. Whereas, everything else is kept neutral from the walls to the furniture. Though you can add a pop of color on the walls or accent pieces shattered throughout. Just make sure the color pattern is consistent throughout to keep with the clean concept of contemporary. This can be achieved by making sure to pair in textures with neutral colors to create a space that invites relaxation. From shades of beige to cream to bring that calming feeling. And soft fabrics on the sofa and pillow bring in the comfort aspect.

Keep it Open

Not every house you own is going to have an open floor plan. But that doesn’t mean you can’t empathize the space, or have to spend thousands to knock out the walls. An open floor plan creates a spacious feel. Using natural lighting through your windows can light or neutral colors can open a space, and make it look warm and inviting. Also not using over-sized furniture can help achieve this as well. Mirrors are another trick that can open up a space and make it look bigger than it is. If you do have an open floor plan this is ideal for that contemporary vibe, since you have the perfect combination of entertaining and family space mixed together.

Lines in Mind

One of the more common tropes of the contemporary style, is the use of lines and geometric shapes. This can be found through architectural details from the use of high ceilings, bare windows, and geometric shapes in wall art or sculptures. Black and white create a neutral stage for sleek furnishings and rich accessories, such as velvet throw pillows on the bed. The bare space, on walls, between pieces of furniture, and above in upper areas, becomes as important as the areas filled with objects. In contemporary interiors, less is more. Each piece stands out as individual and unique. To draw the eye, paint these structural details in bold contrasting colors, or to diminish their importance, blend them with the walls.
