This year, I have been focusing a lot on getting my health back in order and changing my lifestyle up to give myself a bit of a confidence boost after the past two years of just letting myself go. I cut out almost all sugar, go for a walk almost every single day with Pixie, apply makeup every day not just on the weekends, and putting together outfits that aren’t just jeans and a hoodie 7 days a week. But since getting on this health and self-image journey, one thing has just become apparent and needed to be addressed. My teeth.
Not only were they insanely stained but I just had horrible habits around them. And it’s not something that’s new, I’ve never been great about my teeth. When I was little, I would lie and make excuses about not brushing my teeth. And those habits followed me for most of my life. Up until I was twenty-one (three years ago), I didn’t have cavities or really any negative effects from these habits. Even when I had braces, you couldn’t see any sign that they had been on other than my teeth were straight, and my jawline was changed due to the removal of several permanent teeth due to absent teeth I had on the bottom. To get rid of that gap on the bottom they pulled two on the top to even things out. But this gave me an even worse over-bite. And I was done at that point with braces and refused to do anything more with them, my parents agreed and once they were just straight they were removed.
I went back to the same habits I always had and then as I mentioned, things changed. My teeth decided enough was enough. All the energy drink, coffee, pop, and other caffeine/sugar consumption just led to them being stained to a point I don’t smile with my teeth showing. Along with being full of cavities, which I got fillings and veneers for. But the color of my teeth remained something I wasn’t happy with and after months of using activated charcoal, I saw some improvement but not enough where I would feel comfortable smiling.
So, for the past seven or eight months, I’ve been debating on getting an at home teeth whitening system. But never ended up getting one as there were just other things that I needed to address first. And I couldn’t go to a dentist to get my teeth whitened as it would have to come out of pocket. Then Smile Brilliant reached out to me and asked if I wanted to try their system. It was perfect timing like the universe had finally lined up for me. I didn’t have to figure out how to scrap for the money to get my teeth whitened along with all the other work that I needed done. And they made it a super simple process that can be done entirely from your home. A major plus for me since considering I already had a hard enough time dragging myself to the dentist or requesting time off just to do that.
So, what’s the process?
I had to answer a few questions about my dental history. Then two days later I had a Smile Brilliant package waiting for me at my doorstep. Next, I made my teeth molds to be sent back to Smile Brilliant in the provided envelope, so you can receive your custom-fitted whitening trays. This is done using a paste mixed of a base and activator that starts hardening once mixed. You mix the two together then put it in the applied tray. Quickly afterward place in your mouth and use your fingers to press the tray into your teeth so you can get a good impression. You may need to move the paste around to fully cover your gums as they need this to truly see where your teeth end and gums begin for that perfect fit. I’m not going to lie, I drooled a lot during this process so if your mouth does a similar thing… make sure to do it near a sink. I also didn’t do it right the first time. I didn’t see that somehow one tooth didn’t get covered by the paste towards the back on my upper teeth. Luckily, they do provide you with an extra set of paste in case you mess up the first time in making the impressions.
Then about one and a half week later, my custom trays arrived, and I could start the whitening process. Which is simple, fast, and very user-friendly. I ended up doing the whitening treatment every night before bed as recommended. Depending on the day it was anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours with a 45-minute desensitizing session afterward. You only receive three syringes of the whitening solution but you only need 1/4th to 1/3rd of the syringe per application for both of the trays combined. Before starting a whitening session just brush your teeth with water to get off any leftover food that might still be on your teeth from the day, as the fluoride from toothpaste if applied beforehand can slow the whitening process. Next, apply the gel then chill with the trays in your mouth for up to 3 hours. I never did the max amount of time mainly as I didn’t want to be up until midnight.
Once you’re done with the whitening session, brush your teeth as normal with toothpaste before starting a desensitizing session. Even though my teeth are sensitive, I didn’t notice any irritation or sensitivity until afterward if I forgot the desensitizing gel as then water would be a little too cold on my teeth. But they do recommend using some Vaseline or coconut oil on your gums if you do experience this during the whitening sessions. Once the desensitizing session is over, just spit so there is a thin layer of gel left on your teeth and head to bed. Try not to eat or drink afterward so you’re not introducing anything that could stain. Also so the desensitizing gel can absorb into the teeth more so you don’t notice any sensitivity the following day.
