There are certain milestones our body hits, that can really change the way we look and feel. The big 40 is one of those birthdays that doesn’t just feel big on paper. There are actually many ways our body needs a bit of extra care and attention in our forties and beyond. Of course, there’s no need for alarm, but awareness and a proactive attitude can make all the difference in the world. A few minor changes in our skincare routine can make us retain that youthful glow well after forty.

Watch What You Consume

Paying attention to what you eat and drink, and how you live in general is important for your health and looks at any age, but it becomes absolutely crucial after 40. Every sleepless night leaves its mark on your face. Insufficient hydration will inevitably show: when you’re thirsty, your skin is thirsty too. Drinking enough water will help your skin retain its vitality. A nutritious and diverse diet, consisting of various fresh, high quality ingredients is a must. Avoid highly processed foods as much as possible. A lot of people forget that skin is our largest organ – and as any other organ, its health depends on how well we take care of it. Smoking is a big no-no. It will dry out your skin, give you wrinkles, and fill you with all kinds of toxins.

Add Some Extra Nourishment

To slow down the aging process as much as possible, it’s good to add some extra nourishment every once in a while. Find a routine that works for you, and that isn’t too much trouble, so you can maintain it regularly. Depending on your skin type and amount of effort you are ready to put in, that can mean using a serum every night, a weekly homemade mask (there are a lot of recipes that use ingredients you already have in your fridge or pantry), or even a regular facial.

Find the Right Products

Usually, young skin is fairly easy to care of. Mature skin is already starting to show the first wrinkles and imperfections. Rosacea, sunspots, freckles and even eczema are not uncommon. Luckily, by the time you’re forty, you probably already know your skin well enough to identify the problem areas and its particular needs. A high quality, cruelty-free line of products, such as Ultraceuticals, can provide you with a wide arrange of carefully crafted products using the best age-reversing ingredients such as retinol, AHAs, vitamin E and vitamin A.

Always Wear Sunscreen

A lot of people operate on the misguided notion that unless they are going to the beach they don’t need to wear sunscreen. This, unfortunately, couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s been proven that, even if it’s overcast, up to 80 % of sun’s harmful rays still reach us. That’s why you should wear sunscreen on all exposed parts of your body. A moisturizer with an SPF of at least 20 is also recommended to protect the delicate skin of your face.

Consistency is one of the most important things. If you weren’t particularly disciplined about skincare before, now is a good time to start. Listen to your skin’s needs and pay attention to the changes. Just like every other part of us changes over time, so does our skin. It’s unrealistic to expect the things that used to work for you when you were younger, to work for you now. Don’t be afraid to experiment until you come up with a routine that is perfectly tailored to your skin’s needs.
