Dealing with a small, compact bathroom is one of the biggest challenges for every interior designer. This room often fails to get the attention it deserves and not having enough space to work with most certainly doesn’t make the task of designing it any less difficult.

On the contrary, not only that you may not be able to fit in every element you’d like, but you are also facing some tough decisions in order to avoid making your bathroom cluttered and claustrophobic. Still, there’s no giving up, since even the tiniest bathroom can feel and look bigger, provided you follow some simple rules.

Colours and design

It’s well-known that small places and dark colours don’t go well together. So, you should opt for natural colours, such as cream, beige, white if you want your bathroom to look bigger. Having a detail in a contrasting colour is fine, but dark colours must not dominate the bathroom.

Similarly, your design should be as simple and minimalistic as possible, featuring clean line and state-of-the-art decoration, which will make the space much more inviting and comfortable. After all, you want to feel good in your bathroom.

Lights

One of the most important aspects of every interior design solution is the lights. They can make a great difference to both the atmosphere and functionality and, if used correctly, they are also known to make spaces look bigger than they really are.

Ideally, you have enough natural light coming in. If not, you might want to add a window to open the space to the outdoors and also provide better ventilation. If not, opt for bright lights to create an illusion of having a larger bathroom.

Shower room

If there’s anything in your bathroom that you could live without, make sure you get rid of it. For example, if you have a tub, replace it with a shower cubicle to save some space. They come in all shapes and sizes, which means you can definitely find the one that you like and that fits your small bathroom. If you need to change some fixtures, find an expert, such as this reliable plumber from Melbourne, to help you.

Alternatively, if you still want to keep the option of being able to enjoy a relaxing soak, you can go for a bath/shower combo, which gives you the best of both worlds. However, remember that you also save a lot of water by showering instead of taking a bath.

Closed cupboards

As we’ve already established, the more items there are, the more cluttered your bathroom. This also refers to all those toiletries, medicines and cleaning products that you might have out on display. They do belong to the bathroom, but with many of them on open shelves or on the counter, your bathroom will only look even more untidy and cluttered than it really is.

That’s why you should hide as many items as possible inside closed cupboards. Not only will your bathroom bi tidier, but you’ll also get the impression that it’s actually quite bigger. Just make sure you choose the right colour for the cupboard doors since they have to match the colour of your tiles.

Accessories

Glass can come in very handy in making the bathroom appear bigger. Mirrors and clear glass shower screens are excellent solutions for compact bathrooms. They’ll allow plenty of light and bounce it around, thus adding a spacious feel to your bathroom. The effect will be even better if you have enough natural light.

If you can’t convert a room next to your bathroom into an extension of your existing bathroom, you have to look for other solutions for making your bathroom look and feel bigger. Naturally, you can’t achieve a miracle with your design, but you most certainly can avoid cluttering your bathroom and making it look even smaller than it is. All it takes is some careful planning and a moderate budget, which will help you significantly improve the appearance and functionality of your bathroom.
