Is Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer Worth the Hype?

As you know I’ve been in the process of finding a new holy grail primer. And it was requested to give the brand new Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer a try. So I’ve been trying this out a lot with different foundations and then compared it against the Cover FX Gripping + Firming Primer since they have a very similar feel to them for roughly the same price. On most sites, blogs, and videos this product has gotten over four stars out of five for rating by almost every single reviewer. So that made me feel initially when purchasing this primer that it was going to be amazing. Which is why I need to ask is the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip primer worth this hype?

This primer comes in an airless pump so you can see the product in the package go up as you use it. Which also lets you know how much you have left. You get 1.52 oz or 45 mL of product for $30. This is formulated like a lot of their recent products with hemp-derived cannabis seed extract and blue agave extract. The hemp-derived cannabis seed is supposed to help hydrate and smooth the look of skin along with provide antioxidant benefits. While Blue Agave Extract forms an invisible layer to grip makeup, smooth the look of texture, and seal in moisture. There is also Prickly Pear Cactus Extract and Aloe Water to hydrate, soothe, and calm skin. The formula is also free of sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, and triclocarban, gluten and contains less than one percent of synthetic fragrances.

Both the Cover FX Gripping + Firming Primer and the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer are described to give you a glass like finish. And need to be used with minimum amount of product to create a thin layer that needs a minute to absorb into your skin for the gripping effect to take place. And both are tacky even after letting it sit for a minute, but once foundation is applied overtop the tacky feeling goes away as it’s gripped onto that product. However, that is where the similarities end.

The Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer, I found patches where foundation clung or it would skip. And they were very noticeable throughout the day. And no amount of touch ups would make those patches go away. While the foundation did last throughout the day, the patches remained. So ultimately I can’t say this primer is not worth the hype. I kind of wished I had gotten the mini size so I didn’t have an entire one to go through. Since I had a massive primer clear out, I’m going to keep using since I purchased it but I’m not impressed by it. I’ll probably dip into some of the Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer or Cover FX Gripping + Firming Primer to help out this primer.

Love ya,

It’s too bad this primer didn’t work out for you! Did you buy it at Sephora? Because even if you’ve used a little bit of it you can return it, their return policy is seriously awesome. I have a tiny sample of this primer but I haven’t had a chance to use it yet
