Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Armor Comparison and Where to Find Them

I have been playing a lot of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in my spare time after work. One thing I find really interesting in the game is the armor as when you have the full set and upgrade it at a Great Fairy Foundation you get a bonus. Plus unlike other RPG I’ve played it doesn’t take up inventory space. Like you don’t have to get rid of it to free up space for new armor… I did not realize this when I first started playing. I sold off my first outfit as I thought you had to. But no, you don’t. So I thought I would go over each of the armor sets that come in the game and where to find them. This is only focusing on the base games without amiibos or DLCs as I do not have either.

Also no, I don’t have all of the sets in my own game. I’m not that far yet. So I will be crediting any source where I found pictures of those armor sets. I do know where to find the armor from watching a lot of other people play the game.

Ancient Set: Guardian resist up and full set has ancient proficiency. Each part can be purchased at Akkala Ancient Tech Lab after speaking with Purah. After lighting the furnance for Bobbie you can purchase them from the robot Cherry. You will need ancient parts from killing or scavenging Guardians. Max defense level of 27.

Barbarian Set: Attack up and full set has charge attack stamina up. After completing all three labyrinths in Breath of the Wild you will receive the full set. It has a max defense level of 20. The Helm is in the Tu Ka’loh Shrine of Lomei Labyrinth Island in the northeast region of Akkala, which can be reached by gliding from the laboratory. The Armor is in the Dila Maag Shrine of the South Lomei Labyrinth in the Gerudo Desert in the southwest. And the Leg Wraps are in the Qaza Tokki Shrine of the North Lomei Labyrinth in the North Tabantha Snowfield, which is in the Hebra region of the northwest.

Climbing Set: Climb speed up and full set has stamina up when jumping while climbing. Max defense level of 20. Each of the articles are located in shrines. The bandanna is in the Ree Dahee Shrine of Dueling Peaks, the gear is in the Chaas Qeta Shrine at Necluda Sea, and the boots are gained as part of the Secret of the Cedars shrine quest which opens up the Tahno O’ah Shrine on Madorna Mountain in the Lanayru Range.

Dark Set: Night speed up when you have the full set. This set can be purchased from Kilton the Monster Parts Merchant. You cannot dye or upgrade this set. You also need to use Kilton’s currency Mon to purchase, and only can be done after freeing all four Divine Beasts.

Desert Voe Set: Heat resistance up and with full set you get shock damage resistance. This set is the male Gerudo outfit that can be obtained from one of two Gerudo vendors. Either complete the Tarrey Town sidequests in Akkala and buy it from Rhondson, or find the Gerudo Secret Club in Gerudo Town and buy it there. The price is the same whichever option you choose. While it has heat resistance this doesn’t help in Death Mountain. Max defense level of 20.

Flamebreaker Set: Flame guard up and fireproof when you have the full set. This set is purchased from the Goron City below Death Mountain in the Eldin region. The helm will cost a very pretty rupee or rather 2000 rupees to obtain. It has a max defense level of 20. The armor however can be obtained for free with the completion of the Fireproof Lizard Roundup sidequest.

Gerudo Set: You need this to get into Gerudo Town but it doesn’t have any bonuses. You also cannot upgrade this set at the Great Fairy Foundations. They can all be obtained at Kara Kara Bazaar. You do get some heat resistance from the set however so it can be very useful in the desert outside of accessing Gerudo Town. While it has heat resistance this doesn’t help in Death Mountain since you need flame resistance there. This also makes Link look like a pretty girl and I love that for the guy.

Hylian Set: While this set does not have a bonus you it’s one of the full armor sets after the worn set that you can get if you follow the main storyline As you get this set in Kakariko Village in the Dueling Peaks Region. You can also get this set in Hateno Village. Also it’s pretty cheap compared to the other sets. Has a max defense level of 18.

Radiant Set: Blend in with stal monsters and bone weapon attack up at upgrade level 2 with full set. These are all purchased in Gerudo Town after completing The Secret Club’s Secret Side Quest. Has a max defense level of 20.

Rubber Set: Shock resistance up and shockproof with the full set. You receive the helm from the Thunder Magnet Side quest, the armor from Trial of Thunder shrine quest, and tights from A Song of Storms shrine quest. Has a max defense level of 20.

Sheikah Set: Stealth Up and night speed increased with the full set. It can be purchased in Kakariko Village and has a max defense level of 17.

Snowquill Set: Cold resistance up and unfreezable with the full set. This can be purchased from the Rito Village. Has a max defense level of 20.

Solider’s Set: You can purchase this set from Hateno Village but doesn’t give any sort of bonus when worn together. Has a max defense level of 28.

Worn Set… is the very first outfit you get in the game. I saw the first page of armor and thought that was all you could have. So I got rid of this outfit from my game. However, you can upgrade it but it doesn’t give you any sort of bonus so I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much.

Zora Set: Swim speed up. You will receive the armor from the King of Zora’s Domain, the greaves after the completion of the Lynel Safari side quest, and the helm from an underwater chest in Toto Lake above Zora’s Domain. Has a max defense level of 20.

Armor of the Wild: Master sword’s beam is increased in damage. Received after completing all 120 shrines in the game. Once you have accomplished this the monks will invite you to a new area that will give you this gift. When equipped together and upgraded twice the beam from the Master Sword will be increased in distance. To upgrade the items you will need to obtain parts from the three dragons: Farosh, Naydra, and Dinraal. Has a max defense level of 28.

Unique Armor

Credit: IGN

Champion’s Tunic: This cannot be dyed but can be upgraded at the Great Fairy Foundations. Has a max defense level of 32. With this armor you can see a monster’s life gauge. In ancient Hyrule, this garment could only be worn by one who had earned the respect of the royal family. Link was given this armor from Princess Zelda before Calamity Ganon. You get the tunic back after recovering one memory and letting Impa know.

Sand Boots: These help you walk normally on sand. Speak to the man Bozai while you’re dressed in the Gerudo outfit to start the quest The Eighth Heroine, and finish the quest to earn the Sand Boots. They have a max defense rating of 18.

Snow Boots: Similar to the sand boots, snow boots help you maintain your normal speed when in deep snow and have the same defense level of 18 when fully upgraded. Speak to the man Bozai while you’re dressed in the Gerudo outfit to start the quest The Eighth Heroine and get these boots. Once finished, you’ll have to give them back to the Sand Boots, but can then complete the follow-up quest, The Forgotten Sword to securet the Snow Boots for good.

Thunder Helm: This is a precious heirloom among the Gerudo that deflects lightning strikes. It is traditionally only worn by the Gerudo chief. This helmet can only be borrowed after you have helped Riju of Gerudo Town win back the Thunder Helm from the Yiga Clan. After completing the Divine Beast Vah Naboris quest, speak to her again to start the Side Quest: The Thunder Helm. This will require you to complete all Side Quests in Gerudo Town to win the trust of Riju so you can use the helm. It cannot be upgraded and has a defense rating of 3.

Warm Doublet: With a defense rating of 1 and no ability to be upgraded, this may seem pointless but it does give you some cold resistance. The Warm Doublet is owned by the Old Man of the Great Plateau, and can be found in one of three ways:

  1. Check the diary of the Old Man in his hut to find he forgot the recipe to a dish he made using Meat, Spicy Peppers, and another ingredient. Create the dish using Hyrule Bass and show him and he will give you the armor.
  2. You can also climb to the top of Mount Hylia in the plateau and he will appear to congratulate you, and give you the armor if you don’t have it.
  3. If you missed out on both of these opportunities and completed the Great Plateau, check the Old Man’s hut to find he has left it behind for you.

Or if you miss all of that, like I did, you can purchase it in Hatendo Village for 80 rupees.

Jewelry

Link loves a good earring and they can have specific advances. However, they will take the place of head gear so they prevent the full set bonuses. You can get them from in the jewelry shop of Gerudo Town.

  • Amber Earrings: Defense
  • Diamond Circlet: Guardian Resist Up
  • Opal Earrings: Swim Speed Up
  • Ruby Circlet: Cold Resistance Up
  • Sapphire Circlet: Heat Resistance Up
  • Topaz Earrings: Shock Resistance Up

Masks

These will allow you to blend in with monsters so long as you are wearing their mask. These can be purchased from Kilton The Monster Parts Merchant. However, there is one exception. The Lynel mask while it will help you blend in with Lynels at first they will figure it out eventually and attack you. As long as you don’t cause injury to a monster for the rest, they will leave you be. The masks you can get are as followed: Bokoblin, Lizalfos, Lynel, and Moblin.

What to Wear

Here is a quick run down of the list:

  • Attack: Barbarian Set
  • Cold Resistance (Tabantha Region): Snowquill Set, Warm Doublet, or Ruby Circlet.
  • Heat Resistance (Eldin Region): Gerudo Set, Desert Voe Set, or Sapphire Circlet.
  • Flame Resistance: Flamebreaker Set.
  • Shock Resistance: Rubber Set, Desert Voe Set, or Topaz Earrings.
  • Defense (Lynels and Guardians): Ancient Set or Diamond Earrings.

What is your favorite armor from Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? Where I’m at in the game I like wearing the Champion’s Tunic with the Solider’s Greaves and Hylian Hood. I mean that’s all I wore along with three hearts against Waterblight Ganon and did just fine. I don’t know how but it was. Granted the first time I fought him I had the Zora armor on… a bad call there as I dead almost instantly each time.

Love ya,
