Managing Anxiety With a few Simple Skills

Now this post isn’t to say that these skills will cure your anxiety, but they can help you get through it a little bit easier. These are the things that I do when I have a lot of anxiety and stress. Which I have been having a lot of recently, due to both work and the fact that my family has been staying at my place for the last week. So I haven’t really gotten the chance to play video games or film videos, since I just feel the need to entertain them versus doing my usual things to settle myself down. But there are a few things that I’m still doing that are helping me out with managing my anxiety.

  1. Journaling. I have been journaling since my sophomore year of high school and this has always helped me sort out of my thoughts and feelings. Especially when I couldn’t verbally express them or even know what they were until I put pen to paper.
  2. Support. Have a list of people you can reach out to when you are feeling anxious as they can help you work through everything.
  3. Self-Care. This is just take care of your needs. Put them first for once and if you need a mental holiday for a day, take one. It will help you in the long run so you don’t get overwhelmed by your anxiety.
  4. Sleep. Sleep does wonders for you. I always feel more anxious if I didn’t get enough sleep and feel a million times better after I finally get some. If you also struggle with insomnia, take an over the counter sleeping aid. I personally love gummy melatonin. And will take one an hour before I go to sleep so I can make sure I get a full night of rest.
  5. Exercise. Any type of physical activity will help you reduce stress and anxiety. This can be anything from a brisk walk, run, or hike… just something that makes you take your mind off of things.
  6. Breathing. The best thing I ever learned from the short time where I went to therapy were breathing techniques. They help slow down your mind and help you relax.
  7. Listen. This can either be your favorite type of music, YouTube videos or podcasts. They shift your focus off of the anxious thoughts, help improve your mood, and help you relax.
