Pokemon Sword & Shield: Stopping the Darkest Day

Before you can do the Championship Match in Pokemon Sword & Shield, Chairman Rose has decided to enact The Darkest Day which almost had destroyed the region previously. The game leads up to the two legendary Pokemon (Zacian and Zamazenta) located in Slumbering Weald, though you cannot catch them until after you became the Champion of Galar. But you will head there with Hop to collect the rusty sword and shield that you’ll take with you to Hammerlocke where Chairman Rose has gone.

Chairman Rose

Once you get to Hammerlock, you’ll head to the gym which has access to the energy plant located underground. Chairman Rose admits to awakening the Legendary Pokemon Eternatus using wishing stars, which he claims will provide Galar with limitless power. Only they were unable to control the Pokemon and it escaped to the rooftop. Before you can put a stop to Eternatus, you must face off against Chairman Rose. He has five pokemon are Steel or some combination with Steel, and are between level 55 and 57. The most effective Pokemon against them will be Fire though Fighting and Ground are also effective. Like the gym battles the final Pokemon will be Gigantamax.

Eternatus

After defeating Chairman Rose, head up to the roof where Champion Leon has been battling it out with Eternatus. He claims to have weakened the Pokemon but is unable to catch it. So, it’s your turn to go against the Pokemon alone. It’s a Level 60 Poison & Dragon Type Pokemon so Ground, Ice, or Psychic Pokemon are going to be the best for this battle.

Once you defeat Eternatus the first time, this triggers the Legendary Pokemon to go Dynamax. And Hop will join you in this battle. However, you’ll have to go through a few rounds where your moves are completely worthless before Hop suggests using the Sword and Shield you found before. This summons Zacian and Zamazenta to come to your aid.

Depending on your game version, you’ll side with either the Legendary Sword (Zacian) or the Legendary Shield (Zamazenta). They go from their Hero of Many Battles apperance too the Crowned version once they hold the Rusted Weapons. Zacian is a Fairy/Steel type Pokemon, while Zamazenta is a Fighting/Steel type Pokemon. Not that you find out from the battle but they are Level 70.

So, then the battle becomes like the ones out in the Wilderness only there is no Dynamaxing your Pokemon. Battle until Eternatus has been defeated for a second time then you can catch it in a Pokeball. Unlike other Legendaries including the two that you can catch later, it does not require a Master Ball. Then the two legendaries leave once the battle has been won. The Darkest Day is over and it’s time to rest up and become the Champion of Galar.

Pokedex Entries:

  • Zacian attacks so gracefully that its movements can even captivate its opponents. It holds what appears to be a sword in its mouth. Its shining blade can cut through anything.
  • Zamazenta’s regal and majestic movements overwhelm any opponents that dare face it. Its body is covered in what seems to be a shield. Its gleaming shield can turn back any attack.

Like other games, save before you go into battle in case you accidentally knock out the Legendary. So, you can go back and try to catch it all over again.
