Staying Motivated This Holiday Season

This year especially I’m finding it a little hard to get into the holiday mood. Maybe it’s because I particularly got forced out of my place and still have to pay for it while living in a small storage room at my mom’s house. And I know I’m not the only one that struggles during the holiday season. From not getting along with family/relatives to seasonal depression. So here are just a few things you can do to stay motivated during the holiday season.

Keep Yourself Busy

One way to keep yourself from getting in a funk, is by keeping yourself busy with plans and events so you don’t have time to focus on the negative. I always find that works because it prevents my mind from dwelling on everything else going on. This is how I have to get through any event from when my grandma died to when Pixie was insanely sick. The only thing that made me get through those days was focusing on work, and getting involved with as many projects as possible so I didn’t fall apart.

Make Time to Celebrate the Holidays

Holidays fly by every year, and seldom do we make enough time to enjoy them. Sometimes it’s just getting involved in the little things of the season to get you more in the mood. From making Christmas cookies to decorating even if you only have a small area to do so. For me that means, decorating the little end table that I have and putting a more festive blanket on my bed. This has lifted my spirits even if just a little bit. Another thing that I do to get more into the spirit is making peppermint hot chocolate with whip cream and candy cane broken up on top. It might seem silly, but it really makes me feel more into the holiday spirit and motivated to do things.

Find Time to Relax

A lot of the stress over the holidays happens because you don’t take time for yourself and relax. I know that happens for me, as I mentioned earlier I make myself as busy as possible so I can’t stop to think about all the negative. But you can get burnt out if you don’t take a second to relax. And it doesn’t have to be anything big or crazy. Take a moment to have a holiday treat or make yourself a good hot chocolate, then take a second to settle down. It can help you from getting sick or even more over the holiday spirit. Another thing I find relaxing but a good way to stay in the spirit of the holiday is watching Christmas movies with the family. You’re doing something together and you’re kicking back while still enjoying the holiday. You don’t have to do this with the family but I find it to be a lot of fun to do it this way. My family sometimes will even play board games at the same time especially if it’s a movie we’ve seen a hundred times before.

How do you stay motivated for the holidays?
