Looking Back at the Books I Read in April 2023
I started this month feeling in a book slump since I didn't want to pick up any new books. Then, around halfway through the month, I started devouring books again. Though even with that being said, I still feel like I didn't read a lot this month (compared to others) even when you factor in my re-reads. As one of the new books was only half a book and the re-reads I skipped a lot to get to the dialogue or juicy bits. Sometimes I really don't like being a mood reader. If it doesn't vibe with the moment, I cannot make myself read a book regardless of how good it might be. And I know I have a lot of books that I could read. But every time I go to read them, my brain just says "nope, not today." I had every intention of reading Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn when it was released, but the mood didn't strike. And I kept debating rereading the first book in this series, Legendborn. But in the end, I changed my mind because I knew what had happened in the previous book. And, while I recall comparing it to Shadowhunters, I had forgotten how similar the two series are. But a major piece that this series focuses on outside of fighting demons is racism, grief, and trauma from generations past. Bree has to deal with everything that happened with her ancestors while struggling to deal with the racism within the Legendborn community and the lengths they will go to cover up the truth.…

It's no surprise to those who regularly read my blog that I love to read. And I will easily consume around a hundred books a year. However, I'm also a mood reader. What does that mean you might be wondering? Basically, you have to be in a certain mindset or mood in order to read. The Vicious Lost Boys by Nikki St. Crowe is a dark reimaging of Peter Pan and Wendy. This series has four books in total in the main series, though there is going to be a spin-off book in the future. This review is going to focus solely on the main series. These books are fairly short reads, so you can easily read each of them in one sitting. They do have an enemy-to-lover and reverse harem vibe to them, as well as darker undertones. If those aren't your vibe, then this series isn't for you. …

I enjoyed Holly Black's Folk of the Air trilogy, as well as other stories set in the Elfhame universe. So, when The Stolen Heir duology was announced, I was eager to see how things had progressed since Cardan and Jude were elevated to the position of High King and Queen. Granted, this story isn't about them, but about Suren (Wren) and Oak. Wren is a girl around Oak's age who was tortured and called the Queen of Teeth, despite the fact that it was clear in the previous series that she wasn't in control of what was going on around her at the time. Though the last time we saw her, Jude had freed her and given her command over Lady Nore. Although Oak is the rightful heir to the High Throne, Jude and Cardan have decided to wait until he is of age before handing over the crown.…

The second book in the Prophecy of the Forgotten Fae, called A Cage of Crystal, by Tessonja Odette is a rewritten version of Veil of Mist (Lela Trilogy). This was the first ever series by the author. While the book may be fully rewritten there are plot changes, name changes, and other modifications. I never got around to reading the original trilogy though it had been on my TBR before it was unpublished. So, I've gotten to read this story fresh.…

After finishing the previous book in this trilogy by Stephanie Garber, I knew things were going to get interesting in The Ballad of Never After. Whereas the previous series switched off to a new point of view, this one continues following Evangeline. Before I get into too many details in my opening as I could go on about this book in particular, let me just say I would give The Ballad of Never After a 4.25 out of 5 stars rating. And I'm looking forward to what happens in the final book of the Once Upon a Broken Heart trilogy.…
