I saw this tag on Ellie’s blog, Read to Ramble, and she was tagged by Sabrina over at Sabrina’s Booktails, who found this tag on Prutha’s blog, The Confessions of A Music and Book Addict, and after searching through loads of other posts… I can’t find the original author of this tag nor could Ellie. If you know it, please share in the comments. But I wanted to do this tag since it looked interesting and I need something to blog about during the stretches between books. Since I don’t have time to read long books in one sitting at the moment.
The questions:
1. How many books are too many books in a series?
As long as the series isn’t stretched on for no reason, then it can be any length it needs to be to tell that tale. It all depends on the story. Some can be concluded in two while others need nine books to tell everything. The longest I’ve read was A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket which was thirteen books.
2. How do you feel about cliffhangers?
I don’t hate them, but I also hate having to wait months or years between books to find out how one concludes. So, I end up getting the books and letting them sit on my shelves until the final book of a series is published so I can read the entire thing all at once.
3. Hardback or Paperback?
I generally go for paperback books because they are cheaper and I don’t have to deal with dust covers. But if I’m starting a series that isn’t done yet, then I go for hardback so I don’t have to deal with the books not all matching. Again, usually it depends on if I have to wait years for a paperback to come out or not. Though some series I have are a mixture of both, but I’m not going to repurchase books I already have just to make them all match.
4. Favourite book?
I have way too many favorites to pick one. So, instead I’m going to share my favorite genre which is no shocker in anyone that’s been reading my blog the last year: Fantasy. Give me a fictional world with magic or supernatural beings to slip away into and I’ll be content.
5. Least favourite book?
Instead of least favorite book since I can’t think of any, I’m just going to mention the genres I don’t go near as they generally aren’t for me. Those being romance and contemporary.
6. Love triangles, yes or no?
I’ve never really seen love triangles done right. They are more like the author adding in unnecessary tension. So, generally I go with no.
7. The most recent book you just couldn’t finish?
There isn’t any books that I’ve DNF’d but The Empirium Series by Claire Legrand by far has been the most recent I’ve struggled to finish. I still have one more book left in the series. It took me a month to read the first two in the trilogy.
8. A book you’re currently reading?
I’m currently reading Lightbringer by Claire Legrand.
9. Last book you recommended to someone?
Oh From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout, it was insanely good! The series isn’t over yet with the next book coming out in April, which I can’t wait to read. But I have read it around a dozen times already.
10. Oldest book you’ve read?
I think the oldest as far as publication date would be Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll since that’s from 1865.
11. Newest book you’ve read?
I just finished reading Kingsbane by Claire Legrand. If you would like to hear my thoughts on it, check out my review.
As for publication date, I think These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong would be the “newest” as it was released in November 2020.
12. Favourite author?
At the moment it’s between Sarah J. Maas or Cassandra Clare. They might have some problematic stuff in their books (lack of diversity, LGBTQ+ representation, etc.) but I can never put their books down. I return to them time and time again. And I can see improvement in their work over time and including some more of those things in the books.
13. Buying books or borrowing books?
I buy all my books, and if it’s not one that was my particular favorite I donate that book rather than leaving it on my already crowded book shelves. Which is another major reason I don’t read a lot of “new” books as I re-read what I already have on the shelves.
14. A book you dislike that everyone else seems to love?
I’m not even done with it but I got to say The Empirium Trilogy. I don’t dislike it, but it’s just SOOO similar to Shadow and Bone that I feel like I’m reading the same series a second time with a few changed details. Speaking of Leigh Bardugo, I didn’t think Crooked Kingdom was as good as everyone hype it up to be. I felt like every chapter was undoing what the previous chapter mentioned for the entire second half of the book.
15. Bookmarks or dog-ears?
Bookmarks for sure!
16. A book you can always reread?
Any of Sarah J. Maas’s books. I return to those series a lot! A Court of Mist and Fury in particular I’ve opened so many times the binding is coming apart on my paperback book.
17. Can you read while listening to music?
Usually I do, and it’s calming lo-fi music for the most part so it just provides something in the background that I don’t focus on at all. I can’t stand the quiet.
18. One POV or multiple POVs?
Depends on the book and how the other POVs are handled. As long as they are easy to track and I’m not going “who am I?” every time I get to a new section then I’m good.
19. Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days?
If I’m into a book, I read it in one sitting. If I’m not 100% hooked for one reason or another, it’s stretched out over multiple days. It also depends if I have a lot of stuff going on in my life.
