One of my biggest pet peeves in movies, shows, or video games is when they don’t accurately call a beast the correct name between Wyverns and Dragons. So, I thought I would share the major differences between the two.
Wyverns
Example shown above is from Game of Thrones though the show refers to them as dragons (which they are not). But they aren’t the only ones to get this wrong, Smaug in The Hobbit is also a wyvern as depicted in the movie. Even The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim calls the games wyverns as dragons. Wyverns are beasts with a dragon’s head, the body of a serpent, a bat’s wings and two forelegs. Typically wyverns also are smaller in size in comparison to dragons.
Dragons
My favorite mythological creature. They have four legs with none of them fused to their wings. One of my favorite video games, Dragon Age Inquisition, is one of the few to depict this correctly. Dragons are also known to breathe fire whereas wyverns are not (or is way more rare). Typically these mythological creatures also have horns, though this isn’t a requirement for a dragon.
DOES THIS BOTHER YOU TOO IN POP CULTURE? OR IS IT JUST ME?
