Starting a blog always sounds so simple until you get into the process of building one. You have hundreds of questions and maybe not all the answers. But you want to start one in the worst way after reading other blogs for months or years, and want to share your own voice to the online community. So to help you out with answering all those questions so starting a blog is a little bit easier, here are a few steps that you need to begin with.
How do you Pick a Name?
The biggest decision you can make as a new blogger is the name of your blog. There are so many blogs out there, both new and old. So it’s a saturated community and your name needs to stand out from all of them. It should be interesting and possibly nod at what type of blog you are. Though you can always rebrand down the line, which will be stressful in its own right. But that doesn’t mean you should just name it something completely random. But finding a name that clicks and helps the ethos your brand, will come with time.
What Platform to Use?
Once you have the name, you have to decide where your blog will be hosted. And there’s many options out there, some free and some that charge a monthly fee. A good platform to start out on is Blogger, as it is a free to use site with easy to use templates. When I started out this blog, I chose Squarespace, which does costs a monthly fee but allows for a lot of creative freedom. Plus you know templates will not break over time and everything runs smoothly. If you are more code savvy, WordPress is a fantastic option that allows you to customize everything, but widgets can break over time.
What Type of Blog?
You can blog about literally anything under the sun or including the sun. It’s completely up to you. But you should whittle down your topics to 2 or 3, or you have too many things that might put potential readers off. For me, I went with cruelty free beauty and lifestyle. As these include almost all my passions. And for the one that didn’t fit in, I have a separate blog for that. So what type of blog do you want to write? Here are some basic topics you can choose from:
How do you Know Your Audience?
This is an important thing when you are writing a blog, you have to have a target audience in mind when you start. This is usually people who embody the same interests as you. So write to someone around the same age as you that enjoys the same thing, then you’re more likely to grow an audience that enjoys your posts. I use Bloglovin’ to read all the blogs I’m interested in, so I want my posts being one of those that show up on my feed that I would want to click on. Otherwise, why bother writing that post in the first place.
