Fun Facts About Pixie and Winnie

Fun Facts About Pixie and Winnie

I love dogs, I have always loved dogs. In fact "dog" was my very first word and it was what I wished for every year at Christmas until my parents finally caved when I was in Kindergarten and got my first dog named Sadie who was a German Shepherds mix. Probably one of the reasons I love German Shepherds and would love to get another some day. But right now I'm in small townhouse and soon an apartment, so a big German Shepherd isn't in the cards at the moment. Anyways, I want to share more about the dogs in my life on my blog. If you didn't know I have an entire page about them in my about section and they have their own Instagram. So today inspired by From Roses, I'm going to be sharing a few fun facts about each of the pack members.…

How Getting a Dog Changed My Life & Made Me a Better Person

How Getting a Dog Changed My Life & Made Me a Better Person

I have been a massive dog lover all of my life. Hell my first words were dog and I didn't stop repeating that word until my parents got me one. Granted it was the family dog and followed my mom around like a shadow. And I will always advocate for big dogs, they make excellent pillows to rest on or a shoulder to cry on if you need one. Now if you've been reading my blog for a few years, or even just a little while you'll know I do not have a big dog. I have a rather small dog named Pixie who is going to be five this year. And ever since getting my own dog, I have such a better appreciation for them then I ever did before. Not that my first dog, Sadie, wasn't amazing. She was my absolute best friend but she wasn't mine at the end of the day. So these are all of the things that I've noticed since I got Pixie Bug and just general things about dogs.…

Learning Empathy Through Nature: Elephants

Learning Empathy Through Nature: Elephants

So after writing "Learning Leadership Through Nature: The Wolf Pack", I really enjoyed writing about that topic and wanted to explore other things we could learn through natures. Thus was born the idea for this series. I'm going to talking about various skills we can learn from various animals. For today's article, we're going to focusing on learning empathy from elephants. There's no animal I can remotely think of that is as empathic as the elephant. We'll also be returning to the elephant later on in this series are there are multiple skills we can learn from them as they are one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. Plus they are very social leading them to act empathetically towards other members of the herd.…

Saying Goodbye to the Hotel

Saying Goodbye to the Hotel

For the past year and a half, I have worked at a pet hotel almost every weekend where I wasn't on call for my full time job. As I mentioned last Monday, there have been a lot of changes happening. So much so that I had to make a very hard decision to say goodbye to the pet hotel. I gave my two weeks notice a week ago, but I don't have any shifts after yesterday as I go on call the following week so I wasn't on the schedule that last week anyways. So yesterday, I said goodbye to the dogs for the last time. All of the dogs I became very attached to, especially the regulars that came all of the time so I was very teary eyed when leaving. As I was turning in the notice. Though they aren't my pets, I felt like they were part of my pack. Sure I'm not going to miss a few aspects, but overall I loved working at the hotel and seeing all of the dogs. Some weeks it was my highlight of the week, while others were different. Maybe one day I'll go back if things in my life change, but for right now I really need to focus on my full time job and get a day off on the weekends so I don't burn out. As I was constantly becoming burnt out and my physical/mental health was suffering for it.…

When Your Dog is a Picky Eater & How to Deal with It

When Your Dog is a Picky Eater & How to Deal with It

I got Pixie when she was old enough to be adopted and ever since day one she has been a picky eater. She will take her food out of the bowl and either eat or set it somewhere else. Ever since moving in with Rose over a year ago she has began to flip her bowl over so the food goes everywhere. Or she'll just lay down near the bowl defending it from Kiki... but not eating a single bite of it. So how to you convince a dog who is a picky eater to actually eat. Or as my roommate and I comment, "She eats to live. She doesn't live to eat." Whereas, Kiki is the other way around. So is my mom's and sister's dog, Winnie.…

Afternoon at Como Zoo & Conservatory

Afternoon at Como Zoo & Conservatory

On Saturday, I went to Como Zoo & Conservatory with my roommate Harley. To be 100% honest, we were going to go to the zoo mainly to play Pokemon Go, but my app would not sign me in for more than two minutes so I ended up just enjoying walking around the place. However, almost 75% of the people at the zoo were on Pokemon Go and not really watching where they were going in some places. But that didn't bother me as it did for other people... as I wanted to join them to see what Pokemon I could get at the zoo. Whenever I did get on, all that there was available is Magmar.…

Adult Night at Minnesota Zoo

Adult Night at Minnesota Zoo

So one thing I really wanted to do for my birthday was go to the zoo, but in Minnesota it ends up just being a massive crowd of parents with children to the point where it's hot, sticky, and you can't see over them to look at the animals especially when you're five feet two inches tall. My sister, Lucy, discovered we could go to the zoo when there wasn't any of that. Minnesota Zoo was offering starting this summer once a month, a time where it's adults only at the zoo for two and a half hours. So no crowds, no filters, and booze. Sign me up! …

Dog Etiquette: Proper Greeting and Introducing Dogs to Other Animals

Dog Etiquette: Proper Greeting and Introducing Dogs to Other Animals

As I've moved in with two of my best friends. One thing we had to do was get all the animals to meet each other. As well as the dogs haven't met each of us. So I thought today would be a perfect day to chat about that on the blog. My dog, Pixie, is a very timid and not always the most friendliest of dogs when we first introduce her to others. Either she's barking or growling at people, or in defensive attack mode towards other dogs especially dogs smaller than her. And cats are a thing she's never met. So introducing Pixie to Kiki (Cairn Terrier) owned by Harley (yes, I formerly called her Kiki in this blog but figured that would be confusing now that I'm living with both so she will now be known as Harley after Harley Quinn) and Toulouse (Tabby Cat) owned by Ariel was going to be a challenge.…
