Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Matte v. Hydrating Foundation Review & Wear Test

Tarte Shape Tape Foundation Matte HydratingTarte Shape Tape Foundation Matte Hydrating ApplicatorsTo start out this review, I want to start out by stating I’m 99.9% sure I put this foundation previously in an anti-haul after all of the controversy from the shade range. I still stand by that remark that the shade range is god awful and has yet to be corrected. However, after having such poor luck with foundations from the drugstore section and wanting something different… I decided to get both the Shape Tape Hydrating and Matte foundations. I have had great luck with Tarte foundations in the past so I wanted to see what these ones were like knowing full well the shade range is down right shameful.

Okay… now that we’re over that let’s get into the foundations themselves.

Both foundations are $39 for 1.01 fl oz of product. Which is a standard amount of product for foundations. Now it is up there in the price range but similar to other foundations that Tarte has. One thing I do not love at all about the packaging is the applicator being a doe-foot. Does it match the Shape Tape concealer? Yes… but for hygiene a doe-foot is a terrible choice for working makeup artists. Or anyone in general as you can’t clean that before dipping it back into the product. Any liquid formula should come out of a squeeze tube or pump. But I don’t start my products and follow the expiration date very closely as expired product will give you break outs. And I don’t need any of that. So it’s just a thing to note really.Tarte Shape Tape Foundation Applicators.jpg

Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Hydrating Foundation

Tarte Shape Tape Foundation HydratingI got this foundation in the shade porcelain which is the lightest foundation in the collection. This foundation in particular I wanted to try out in the worst way as for the longest time I had Tarte Double Duty Beauty Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation on my wishlist, then almost immediately after the shape tape hydrating foundation was released that foundation was removed from their collection. A lot of people compared the formulas and found they were identical. So basically it’s just repackaged under the ever so popular name of Shape Tape. And the main reason I decided to just give these a chance even though the shade range is down right laughable.

So what are the claims of this foundation:

Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Hydrating Foundation provides buildable, longwearing coverage in a skin-smoothing, weightless gel. The collagen & hyaluronic acid-packed formula continuously hydrates while helping to plump skin & refine pores, without creasing, caking or fading for 12 hours.

Skinvigorating Ingredients:

  • Biopolymer Filling Spheres: Expanding spheres help smooth surface imperfections while promoting water retention & hydration
  • Hyaluronic Acid: Naturally-occurring ingredient in the human body which delivers moisture, firmness & suppleness to skin
  • Collagen: Helps plump the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles
  • Barley Extract: Helps restore the lipid barrier to smooth over fine lines & wrinkles
  • Dermal filler: Cross-linked hyaluronic acid that works overtime to help restore skin volume & smoothness
  • Vitamin C: Antioxidant free radical fighter that helps prevent premature signs of aging & brightens skin
  • Amazonian Clay: Nature’s most perfect ingredient for better, longer, truer wear

Hypoallergenic. Tarte 12-hour power. Oil-free. Dermatologist tested.

I wore this foundation on one half of my face, and seriously loved how it loved. I didn’t notice any creasing, caking, or patches suddenly gone over the course of the day. And I wore it from around 10 AM to 11 PM… so over the 12 hour mark in total. By the end of the day, my foundation and makeup was still looking fantastic. I will for sure be wearing this foundation again as I just loved how it looked on my skin.

Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Matte Foundation

Tarte Shape Tape Foundation MatteOn the other half of my face, I wore the matte foundation. This one didn’t seem to be a replacement for anything else in their collection so a new formula all around to match the concealer. I love a good matte finish though my skin goes back and forth between dry and oily these days. And I can never predict which one it’s going to be unless I wait to apply foundation on around lunch time… which I can’t really do on a work day. So I don’t wear foundation on those days. But on the days I do, I would love a good matte foundation but if I’m dry I’ll switch to the hydrating one.

So what are the claims of the Shape Tape Matte foundation:

Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Matte Foundation provides the same full coverage as its concealing predecessor – it smooths over pores & imperfections with rich, airbrushed full coverage that dries to a flawless matte finish using a unique, concealer-inspired wand. The formula absorbs oil & shine while leaving skin creaseless, hydrated, free of flakiness or cakiness & helping to improve skin health with every application.

Tarteist Tip: Swatch the foundation on your jawline, blend it in, & let it dry down before deciding on your ideal shade.

Skinvigorating Ingredients:

  • Vitamin E: A natural preservative that also works as an emollient & antioxidant
  • Mineral Pigments: Soothe & soften skin

Dermatologist tested. Hypoallergenic. Waterproof. Longwear. Vegan. Oil-free. Talc-free. Alcohol-free.

Like the hydrating foundation, I wore this for 12 hours in total… probably a little bit longer but one never really knows since when you start doing your makeup everything is applied at different times. And at first when applying this foundation, I noticed it clung to the peach fuzz around my lips. Which made me look like I had a mustache… not attractive in my opinion on myself. But over time, I didn’t notice it anymore or that it was settling in fine lines. It might have in my forehead, but they could’ve also been the concealer I applied there. But it didn’t settle in the smile lines where I didn’t have concealer, so I’m just going to blame that on the concealer.

I do have to say I think the matte foundation looked better as the day went on compared to when I first applied it. Probably due to the fact that I was having a little bit of an oily day. Not anything where I looked shiny, but I think just enough where it helped the foundation to look better. So that I enjoyed. But if it had been a dry day, this foundation would not have been my friend.

Tarte Shape Tape FoundationI also noticed on both sides of my face, it feels a little bit smoother than it had before I applied foundation. So don’t know if I’m just imaging things after noting the claims, or the foundation really does make your skin smoother/softer. We will have to see as time goes on. If you’ve tried these foundations, what is your thoughts on them?

Love ya,

I feel like I kind of pushed this foundation to the back of my brain after the shade controversy, plus I don’t think they have a shade that will match me 😭 but I really do want to try it because of how much I love Tarte!

Totally agree, I pushed this foundation onto my anti list and didn’t give it much of a thought until I tried a lot of bad foundations in a row and just wanted to try something from a brand that I always have good luck with. And while I’m happy it works I totally agree the shade range is awful, they really need to expand it especially if what they said was true that they had those “in the works.”

Hopefully they will come out with way more shades soon! Like by the end of the year 😂

I wasn’t crazy about this foundation at first, but I just scraped the last bit out of the Hydrating Foundation and I’m like damn, this is so under rated! Did you find that throughout the day it looks better as you wear it?

Completely which really surprised me, but I love that! ‘Cause normally it’s the other way around, it gets worse throughout the day but this one seemed to look better. Which is probably from the foundation mixing with your natural face oils.
